Information about Municipal House

King Wenceslas IV. decided in the late 14th century to establish his residence in this area, beside the fortification walls. The residence was given the name King’s Court.

The Municipal House is a popular tourist attraction because it is one of the most remarkable constructions of NeoBaroque, NeoRenaissance, and both Western and Oriental influences fuse together with Czech Art Nouveau.

The monumental appearance of the building is crowned by the outstanding decor created by most of the prominent Czech artists of the day, namely the painters Municipal House (Obecní dům)

and the sculptors

At the heart of Municipal House today is the biggest concert hall in Prague – Smetana Hall. This is the grand setting for a regular programme of the best classical concerts in Prague. The interior is decorated with works by leading Czech artists from the early 20th century - most notably the famous Alfons Mucha. Concerts take place also in Sladkovsky hall, Art Nouveau Hall and Gregr Hall. 28th October 1918, Municipal House was the scene for the historic proclamation of the independent state of Czechoslovakia.
